Why Be Safe?
I am a big fan of public transport. Growing up in a small town where it was impossible to get great public transport except auto rickshaws, I must admit Mumbai was fun. I got spoilt for choices. Buses trains metro and even school buses.
My older one and I had this fantastic routine we used to follow when she was in kindergarten. We would leave home at about 7.30 in the morning and take a BEST bus to her school bus stop. It was a delightful ride for about 10-15 minutes and we were there everyday which meant the drivers, conductors and even the regular co-passengers knew us well.
Then I got pregnant with my second one. Our routine remained the same and one day as I was trying to get down the bus, a scooterist tried to squeeze his way between the bus and the footpath. My older one was behind me. The driver screamed a warning as he saw the scooterist in his rearview and at the same time the conductor shouted out a warning as well as, he was looking back to see if passengers were boarding. If both of them hadn't been so aware, I am sure it would have been a bad day for me. After that, every time I would get off the driver and conductor, both, would remind me to be careful and get down. A small safety precaution but it influenced my daughter so much that even today she reminds me to be careful.
As a parent whose child spends more than 45 minutes in the school bus everyday, I am paranoid about safety like every other parent.
